Richard and I make the rather foolhardy decision on the hottest day of the year to visit Hampton Open Air Pool, an idea that has struck only 99% of the population of South West London as well. We get there 40 minutes before it opens and there's already a queue of 30. I consider ringing up Richmond Council to tell them that all their truanting children are here, as well as a few prosecutable parents.
But even the squealing of tattooed teenagers can't disguise the fact that heat becomes bearable when cool water is only 10m away. In fact the heat is pleasant as long as one doesn't have to cook, travel, work or do more or less anything than laze around.
