Mid-30s Mind Muddle
Jan. 14th, 2007 12:34 pmA warning to all you under 25 year olds: Don't spend your twenties drinking, smoking and taking intermittent drug, or you will end up as a 33 ¾ year old with a memory the size of a lentil. At my parents' house at Christmas, I picked up Other Voices, Other Rooms by Capote and started reading it. It seemed very familiar and I realised that I read it about 11 years ago. I taped Scandal off of Film 4 and when it got to the faux-lesbian scene, I remembered watching it last time it was on television. I go to see new bands and then recognise that I've seen them before at the Buffalo Bar.
But it's getting worse. I dreamt on Thursday night that someone was going to make a film about Brian Clough. When I woke up I thought: Well, now that they've done a movie about Idi Amin, I suppose anything's possible. I repeated this to David and he said: Yes they are making a film. And it's by the same people who made The Last King of Scotland. It was in the Guardian. I found the link but have no recollection of reading the article. Then I said: Who's going to play Clough? I bet it'll be that Michael Sheen. He's always in these things. Yes, said David, it will be him. It's been announced.
But I don't remember reading any of this. I've always been able to pick up a great deal of information without really paying attention (some call this multi-tasking, I call it having poor concentration), but it's getting bizarre. I wonder if this is how people who think they are psychic start believing they are psychic; it's all about having a terrible memory.
So, people who were born in the 80s: don't have that fifth Bacardi Breezer. In ten years time, you'll be reading about Daniel Craig playing Jose Mourhino in the film of his life, dreaming about it and then thinking you have second sight. It's a slidey slope to senility.
