It wasn't all Joanne Joanne Joanne Joanne
Aug. 24th, 2013 10:58 amFriday night to the Rum Runner club in Birmingham in 1981. Sorry, I mean the Lexington in Islington to see Joanne Joanne, an all-female Duran Duran covers band. Their strap-line is that they don't do Rio, they play B-sides, album tracks, forgotten singles, thus New Religion, Hold Back The Rain, Faster Than Light, Careless Memories and the less obscure Planet Earth and The Chauffeur, which was beautiful, it only needed a gallon of dry ice to create a video for MTV.
Joanne Le Bon has got a heck of a voice (more tuneful, less nasal than Simon LB; I actually got a shiver down the spine when she sang blue-silver), and a fanstastic stage presence, whilst
charleston spanked her plank like an axe-monstress and was more attractive and amusing than Andy Taylor. There was not only slap bass but fretless bass for that authentic 80s sound. These were songs I hadn't heard for 30 years, some I'd never heard at all: my income in 1984 was around £60 a year, which had to keep me in sweets, ice-cream, plastic jewellery, and 10p bus fares, so there was little left for (cassette) albums. I'm afraid that I prioritised Nik Kershaw and Wham over Duran Duran, so I've never actually heard Seven And The Ragged Tiger in its entirety, never mind the B-sides. I wasn't a pop-kid, I didn't buy singles, I didn't have a record player. But I'm so glad that 11 year old me had Duran Duran and not One Direction and that this bunch of girls were inspired to be, not marry their idols. We're all Joannies now.
