My dear old swannee
Apr. 3rd, 2011 11:11 amYesterday, we went to the Lea Valley Country Park, on the basis that it's 25 minutes away by local train.
Swans are very mythical creatures. I don't mean Leda, but the amount of 'facts' that exist about them.
1. They can break your arm
I've never known anyone who has known anyone who has heard of anyone's arm every being broken by a swan.
2. They all belong to the queen
The birds in the royal parks 'belong' to her Lizness, but not every swan in the country.
3. They mate for life
I'd like to see some kind of scientific research on this.
4. They are mute
No, they make grunting, hoarse whistling, and snorting noises.
5. Asylum seekers catch and eat them
Made up by the Daily Star.
6. Natalie Portman only danced 5% of the ballet scenes in Black Swan.
But she looked authentic.
