Big Brother's influence spreads - from the tabs, to the broadsheets, to my mum, to school, where, it was reported this morning, the black kids and the white kids are ganging up on the Asian kids and signing 'apple' to them. This means All Paki People Leave England. Children are so charming. This is kind of unusual for a deaf school, as usual insults would be, for example, an 'L' signed to mean lesbian, or a made-up sign which involved jutting out the lower lip to mean 'Fuck off', which went on amongst the children for a week or so, until the adults discovered out what it meant. Deaf palare. So, an acronym is a bit complex, and must have been picked up from outside of school/the deaf community. Adults are so charming.

On the subject of BB, I don't seem to remember anyone complaining about racist attitudes towards the asylum seeker in the regular series of 3(?) years ago; indeed, no-one complained about the homophobia of said asylum seeker to the gay fellow who didn't like him on grounds of race. But then again, neither were young or pretty. No-one complains about the sexist behaviour of the casting for the regular series when the dimmest, blondest women who think that wearing a Playboy bunny outfit is empowering are picked over more interesting people, such as Anna the ex-nun from the first series. No-one complains about Dirk Benedict's misogyny. Moreover, the Sun (whose own face is pretty much one of HATE), is picking on the fattest and ugliest of the three white girls picking on the brown girl. Plus ca change.

Re: BB - There's a really interesting debate to be had about what is considered offensive and why and it doesn't look like anyone is interested in having this. You get the odd interesting comment - I liked some of Germaine Greer's article in the Guardian and Paul Morley on Newsnight Review seemed to be saying something of interest but only had 2 minutes to put this across - but most of it just seems to be good old-fashioned frothing at the mouth journalism to sell papers. *sigh*

...and get ratings. Everything I've read has been either a) Jade is indicative of our appalling post-colonial racism or b) it's about class, and Jade's white trash ignorance vs Shilpa's middle class arrogance.

I just think it's about two childish people having a fallout. They both seem pretty obnoxious people. Funny that it's the "celeb" BB that has provoked calls for its cancellation rather than the "regular" version.
