millionreasons: (wine)
Last night, to the Wenlock Arms for real ale that smelled of green eggs, and pub quiz, run by the Fat Controller who seems to have been forced by the NHS or someone to lose 10 stone. Honestly, he's a mere slip of a man now.

We had the Team Of All the Talents:

Allan: Cricket, lateral thinking, Scotland
Heike: German rivers, facial recognition, anagrams
Jo: Chemical elements, 80s pop, bird identification
Rachel: 60s's pop, tunnels through mountains, characters in M*A*S*H
David: Aeroplanes, Africa, cycling

Unfortunately, the TOAT wasn't enough to win in the face of Tenants super strength competition. This isn't a pub you can waltz into with your A-level knowledge and scoop the jackpot from under the noses of regulars. For one thing, the quiz is free - people are playing for pride (and the prize of two pints (per team)), and for another, the pub is full of CAMRA characters who do this every week and probably stroke their beards whilst thinking: "We should really put a team together to enter Eggheads."

We came joint second on the music round (let down by lack of Elbow and MGMT knowledge) and about 6th on general knowledge. The shame.

Other (non-LJ) blogs that I read via netvibes* feeds:

Corrieblog and Coronation St blog - off-kilter episode reviews, Blanche quotes and all the best spoilers.
Mistaking Coincidence for Fate and The Ack Attack - two Lost blogs, the former theories, speculation and insightful ep reviews, the second snarky, sarky, hilarious recaps and inventor of the word 'Jears'.
Londonist - so I know what's going on
Hackney Antics and Open Dalston - so I know what's going on East
Life on the Veg - tales of an allotment from [livejournal.com profile] fadedglamour
I want more - friend of an LJ friend and a friend of a real life friend. She writes good stuff.
Glitter for Brains and Skip's Acorn Treasury. Gays about town.
Purl Interrupted - I have no interest in knitting, but this is an example of how a good writer can make their passion interesting to others.
Rachel from North London - 7/7 survivor and activist.
In dub with these times in spite of these times - nostalgic fanzine-y offshoot of In Love With These Times In Spite of These Times.
Mark Steel's blog - only occasionally updated but is very *snorts tea*. This entry about Geoffrey Boycott made me laugh for 2 or 3 days.
Biology of the worst kind - Jenny Diski's even less updated blog. Freelance journalist from the London Review of Books school of thoughtful, considered prose.
Bellaphon - reviews of the sort of cafes and restaurants people actually go to (i.e. not the Ivy), including every hipster East London java joint.
The Hathor Legacy - feminist reviews of books, films and, oddly, adverts.
Another Nickel in the machine - fantastic Secret London histories with photos and a soundtrack. The latest entry about Ras Prince Monolulu is just fascinating.
Nothing to see here - strange little places around the country. This blogger also writes I Like which is about classic cafes, design, seaside resorts and Tunnocks tea-cakes.
Boring Postcards - does exactly what it says on the blog.
