I'm spending my early mornings and late evenings in bed with Christopher Isherwood. It occurs to me that just as Orwell's concepts (Big Brother, Room 101, variations on Two Legs Bad, Four Legs Good) have entered culture and consciousness, that so have Isherwood's, not just Liza as Sally Bowles, but I'm sure that the fussy, camp newsagent Norris in Coronation Street was based on the same Norris who liked to change trains. And Candace Bushnell created a semi-autobiographical alter ego Carrie Bradshaw, like her namesake William, to report on sex in the city (different city).
