Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] commonpeople mentioned awful post-Brit pop band Bennett (I seem to remember that I vaguely knew their manager) and I thought of other late 90s bands that were just floating around there without really fitting into a 'scene', or indeed being remembered at all. Instead of singing about Iceland, Bawl wrote about Safeways. I love the twangy chords and the violins.

Scouse folk-hippies Ooberman wrote this dreamy, fey shanty.

Does anyone else remember either of these bands? I asked this of Facebook, but it was during the dead hour of between 5 and 6.

Hehe, a couple of my friends met and got together with each other on the Ooberman message board. Myself I only really remember Physics Disco.

I don't remember them!

I'm overdue a post on Romo - I'd be interested to know who remembers Plastic Fantastic, Minty, Sexus and, of course, Orlando!

Apart from Orlando, all those bands were awful. I liked a song called Lights, Camera, Revolution - I think that was by Hollywood.

Oh, they had their moments! ;-)

I never heard Hollywood! Do you have anything by them still?

I think I have the Romo compilation on tape somewhere. Give me some time to find it! They sounded a bit like this:

Oh dear... I can just imagine it.

It's a crime that YouTube doesn't have the video for Sexus' Edenites.

Bawl is such a Britpop band name. I seem to remember tons of them just being one word. Friends of mine put together a band and I recommended they call themselves Vesper.

Too many syllables ;-)

I remember them both - in fact, the drummer in Bennett was the cousin of a housemate of mine (which is arguably as good a connection as yours). I can't admit to any particularly strong feelings for them, but they weren't that bad, were they? A passable little combo who neither released anything of significance nor caused me any major irritation. John Peel used to go around talking about how he was a fan of them.

I remember far too many obscure nineties bands, in fact (and obscure British sixties bands, either could be my specialist topic on Mastermind). The major meme in some corners of the Internet is this atrocity:

It's the logical answer to the question: "Why did Britpop have to die?"

I suppose there was just no point to Bennet; that's why they seemed and seem annoying. Like Kasabian.

That Catch song is a great parody of menswear et al. It *is* a parody isn't it? Isn't it??!!

Sadly, I don't think it is at all. A cash-in, possibly - a parody, no. Although I suppose Toby Slater (the lead singer) does have an opportunity to claim it was supposed to be a parody now it's spreading around the net. It may be the only chance he has to regain some dignity.
