millionreasonsOver to the Homerton house for "Fat Diego's Bavarian Barbecue"; there's Tango music in the kitchen, Bavarian beer (well, Becks) in the fridge and a telly on a workbench with the aerial hanging off the shed door in the garden to watch the Germany/Argentina match. I have decided to embrace our Teutonic Overlords given that a) we're all Anglo-Saxon nowadays and b) they seem to know how to pass the ball, something England do tend to struggle with. There are also Argentinian-style steaks on the barbie although the vegetarians are served well by Allan's Greek salad and Dave's legendary halloumi 'n' mushroom burgers, and toasted marshmallows and melty chocolate for pudding. After the football we 'watch' the cricket on the red button page (like in the old days when people used to watch it on Ceefax) and then the Tour de France time trials which take place in Rotterdam. I'd like to see them do a Hackney to Islington time trial, see how they'd cope with the white vans, potholes and bike thieves.
Eventually the telly is turned off and Heike puts on her German music - Kraftwerk, Trio, Falco and the Deutsch version of 60's beat-pop (no Nena or schlager) and conversation turns to such hot topics as Joaquin Pheonix's rap career, whether Rocque Santa Cruz or Xabi Alonso is the better looking (I was very disappointed that Joachim Low did not swap his shirt with Maradona at the end of the match), who has the stupidest name - Mardy Fish or Fred Funk, if deciding on the best Twilight film is like deciding if Hitler, Himler or Goebels was the least worst Nazi, the best Bob Dylan song puns, what we used to eat for tea when we were ten years old and whether Radiohead were to Science students what the Smiths were to the humanities geeks. The barbie which doubled up as a campfire to drink sour cherry schnapps over.
Earlier on, this registered paedophobe spent (some of) the afternoon allowing a small infant to put pegs on her toes and then lifting him up when he wanted to see the pussy cats next door (they were keeping a close eye on him too).
